Thyroxine (T4) is a thyroid hormone formed by the condensation of two molecules of the amino acid tyrosine. Also known as T4 for tetraiodothyronine, the thyroxine molecule has four carbon iodine. Thyroxine is produced by the thyroid follicles. Thyroid hormones affect a large number of organs. They tend to increase the basic metabolism and consume oxygen, allowing heat production.
